PNG vs. JPG vs. WebP: Which Image Format Should You Use?

The best format depends on what is inside the image and where it is going. Converting everything to PNG can create huge files. Converting every logo to JPG can add an unwanted background and soften sharp edges.

JPG: the familiar photo format

JPG is a practical default for photographs. It supports adjustable lossy compression, which means the file can become much smaller by discarding detail that is usually hard to notice at normal viewing size. JPG does not support transparent backgrounds.

PNG: sharp graphics and transparency

PNG is useful for logos, interface screenshots, diagrams, and artwork with flat colors or transparency. It preserves hard edges well, but photographic PNG files can be dramatically larger than JPG or WebP.

WebP: compact and modern

WebP can handle photographs, graphics, and transparency while often producing smaller files. Modern browsers support it well, but some older forms, desktop programs, or organizational systems still ask specifically for JPG or PNG.
